About this coffee

Java Old Brown is not your everyday coffee. This is a traditional Indonesian style that celebrates time, patience and craftsmanship.

Grown at altitudes between 800 and 1400 metres above sea level, these beans develop depth and structure in the warm, humid climate of Java. The lower mountain elevation allows the coffee to build body and richness, rather than sharp acidity, making it beautifully smooth and comforting in the cup.

Unlike fresh crop coffees that are shipped soon after harvest, Old Brown coffee follows a much slower path.

After harvesting, the beans are processed using the dried method. This means the coffee cherries are laid out to dry naturally in the sun with the fruit still intact. During this stage, sugars from the fruit slowly influence the bean, encouraging deeper sweetness and heavier body.

Once dried and hulled, the green beans are then stored for an extended period, traditionally for several years. Over time, exposure to the warm, humid air of Indonesia changes the character of the coffee. The beans darken in colour, turning from green to a rich brown. Moisture levels drop and acidity softens. What remains is a mellow, rounded coffee with earthy complexity and almost no sharpness.

This ageing process is what gives Old Brown its distinctive profile. It is less about brightness and more about depth. Think smooth dark chocolate, polished wood, gentle spice and a subtle sweetness that lingers.

The Roast

We roast this coffee to a medium dark level to enhance its natural richness. The roast brings forward notes of cocoa and spice while maintaining the smooth, low acidity character that makes Old Brown so distinctive.

In the Cup

Expect a full bodied, low acidity brew with deep earthy tones and a velvety mouthfeel. It works beautifully as a cafetiere or espresso and produces a comforting, classic cup that feels timeless.

If you enjoy bold flavour without sharpness, Java Old Brown delivers a beautifully mature and satisfying coffee experience.

To ensure maximum freshness, quality and consistency, every batch is roasted in small quantities in Norfolk, United Kingdom.

Coffee Formats Explained

We offer our coffee in a range of formats to suit your brewing method.

  • Whole Bean: Our top recommendation, giving you the freshest cup when ground at home.
  • Cafetiere: A coarse grind, perfect for Cafetiere / French Press brewing
  • Filter: A medium to fine grind, ideal for filter / V60 / Chemex methods.
  • Aeropress: We would class this as a fine+ grind. Ideal for smooth extraction
  • Espresso: an extra fine grind. Ideal for espresso machines requiring ground coffee, Moka Pot or Stove Top brewing.
How much do i need?

Most people use around 15 to 18 grams of coffee per cup depending on the brew method. On average if you drink two cups a day you will go through about 250 grams in a week.

It is always worth ordering a little extra so you never run out!

Coffee Freshness

Most of our coffee is dispatched on the same day as roasting, ensuring it reaches you at peak freshness and each bag is clearly marked with a Roasted On date.

To allow flavours to develop and excess CO₂ to dissipated after roasting, we recommend allowing our freshly roasted coffee rest for at least 72 hours before drinking. Don't worry though, it will still taste great if you can't wait that long!

Our packaging contains a one-way degassing valve to both allow the degassing process to continue and keep unwanted air out.

Although our coffee can be stored for up to 1 year, we recommend enjoying within 1 month for maximum flavour. For best results, store your coffee in a high-quality airtight container.
